Tandem Skydive & Instructor Assisted Freefall

A USPA certified tandem master trains and jumps with a first time jumper after a fifteen to twenty minute class. The tandem skydive is the easiest way to introduce anyone to the wonderful sport of skydiving.

Tandem Student Shawn with Poly, his Jumpmaster.

The student is attached to the tandem master via a harness, while the tandem master wears the parachute. Both student and instructor exit the aircraft over two miles above the ground. You'll enjoy 70-90 seconds of freefall while overlooking the beautiful Monterey Bay and Salinas Valley, then the instructor assists the student with practicing rip cord pulls and freefall turns. Next, at the proper altitude, the student may open the parachute. Together, the pair then steer and land the parachute back on the airport.

Since our drop zone is on the airport, it's easy for your friends and family to witness your entire adventure. They can see you climb on the airplane and, shortly thereafter, gently touch down on the drop zone.

At Skydive Monterey Bay Inc. your first tandem jump is only the beginning. It is also the completion of the first level of the USPA's newest approved method for Instructor Assisted Freefall, which is an accelerated training method that combines tandem and single jump master assisted Accelerated Freefall. This method is designed to efficiently provide individualized instruction to all students. The direct physical presence of a tandem instructor on a first jump greatly reduces the student's level of stress. Thus, the student is able to relax and overcome sensory overload easily. This also greatly increases the student's self confidence and allows the instructor to quickly advance the student from tandem instruction to instructor assisted free fall skydives.

Skydiving Ground School

Before transition to solo jumps, all students attend a ground school that includes information about normal and emergency situations. Subjects include equipment, aircraft, freefall, parachute operations, and landing.

This class typically lasts between four and six hours. First jump courses are offered seven days a week and are taught by USPA certified instructors.

Classes start at 9:00 a.m. sharp Monday through Friday, and at 8:00 a.m. on the weekends.

Reservations and a deposit are required for this class so give us a call!

Accelerated Free Fall (AFF)

Since 1981, AFF has been the most popular training program for those who want to become licensed skydivers. The entire program consists of seven levels, with the first level including the completion of ground school. Each additional level requires about 30 minutes of training.

Levels 1-3 include jumps with two USPA certified jump masters, who will assist you from aircraft exit to parachute opening. You land the parachute with radio assistance.

Levels 4-7 include one jump master who accompanies you throughout the dive. You open, steer, and land the parachute solo with, a radio only for backup.

Exit altitude is from 15,000. Each jump includes a thorough debrief designed to provide the student with training feedback allowing the student to learn from each experience. Completion of the course provides each new skydiver the skills and knowledge for basic and safe recreational skydiving. Basic skills are included in the standard ground school.

Accelerated Free Fall puts a greater emphasis on free fall skills that include the following:

      • Poised Exits
      • Diving Exits
      • Body Position
      • Altitude Awareness
      • Forward Movement
      • Tracking
      • Free Fall Turning
      • Back Loops
      • Barrel Rolls

Static Line

While static line jumps were considered the standard for a long time (and are still used by the military), it is now considered something of an outdated method with which to train students. We strongly encourage people wishing to learn to skydive to utilize our Accelerated FreeFall course.

If you are still interested in static-line training please call ahead for more information.

International Training Center

In addition to student training, Skydive Monterey Bay Inc. is a center used by the US Parachute Association for training and certifying experienced jumpers for other operations. We also have full time on staff a Tandem Examiner responsible for training and certifying tandem masters. Other drop zones send their staff to us for certification and training.

Our student graduates and experienced jumper trainees have come from around the country and across the globe including Japan, Switzerland, England, Canada, Mexico, and South America.
